Empowering our students to stand up for themselves in a respectful way is a necessity nowadays. Encouraging them to tell others to stop what they are doing, or finding an adult that can help, are strategies that can support your child to be empowered and able to stand up for themselves. The poster below is a tool we are using to identify what bullying is – and what it isn’t. Bullying is the repeated actions of another person that are designed to purposefully hurt or upset others. Quite often it doesn’t stop when someone becomes upset or is hurt. A lot of the children we talk to about possible bullying behaviours have excuses for their behaviour – oh I didn’t mean it. I was just mucking around or she knows I don’t mean it. It would be great if parents discussed this with their children at home.
Another positive that’s come from understanding bullying (using the poster below) is learning to describe other negative behaviours. We’ve talked about intentional behaviour – when a person does something on purpose and we’ve been naming behaviour up as rude and mean as well. The poster is a good one, it’s helping our students and it’s on display around our school. Have a look for it and start a discussion with your child.
U Think U Know
Constable Bailey visited SGPS on Wednesday 26th July to share important information with our students about cyber safety. All students attended age-appropriate presentations and both students and teachers learnt new facts about the importance of cyber safety and ways to be safe online.
Constable Bailey also took lots of questions about being a policeman and what he does in his role. Constable Bailey also enjoyed interacting with our community during break times.

We have had a great start to the term in 3/4 Mahy!
In literacy we are investigating the features of information texts. We have identified the importance of sub-headings to ensure our reader knows what the content of each paragraph will be.
In maths we are exploring the different strategies we can use to solve multiplication problems. Some of us prefer skip counting or repeated addition while some of us use arrays. Some even ‘make cookies’ by representing the question as equal groups! We have included some pictures of our strategies. Next, we will be setting a times table goal to achieve by the end of the term.
We are looking forward to our fortnight of swimming lessons beginning on Monday morning!
For NAIDOC week last term, 5/6 Jones read the book ‘Sea Country’ written by Aunty Patsy Cameron and Lisa Kennedy.
We discussed how kids might have used sea country as their playgrounds and talked about all the different ways that kids might have entertained themselves on sea country. We talked about how they would have felt a sense of freedom whilst playing on sea country. We also explored what it about what it meant to hear country speak to us, and that looking for a ring around the moon meant that bad weather was coming and when there were clouds coming over the mountain it meant that it was going to rain.
After reading, we used the illustrations to inspire our own art work the reflected sea country.
