Having fun at school – it does happen!
An important part of building commitment to school and learning generally is ensuring students enjoy school and have the opportunity to apply themselves in a variety of ways. While many students head home and suggest school is boring and they never get to do anything fun, I’d like to share with you a number of things we do as a school to engage and motivate students.
Friday Fun is probably our biggest hit! Every Friday afternoon students get the opportunity to participate in extra curricula activities that they are interested in – everything from outside games and gardening to hama beads, board games, cooking, stop motion animation and craft! Interestingly enough there aren’t usually any behaviour problems during this time ?
Recently we have had Mona in the school to do a huge plant of vegetables into the newly finished school garden and last week we did tree planting along our boundary with St Francis. Students have asked for more equipment to play with outside at recess and lunch time, so each class got a range of sports equipment that included, balls, hoops and ropes just to name a few. New basketball hoops and back boards have been installed on the outside basketball court and large mats are available in the new part of the gym to help students with a positive opportunity to blow off excess energy.
Art and Music are always popular parts of the school program and some special work has been done using literature as a starting point. This work has been put up on display around our school. I’ve included a couple of pictures below. We also participate in the Northern Suburbs Friday Afternoon Sport roster – this is very popular with the older students. Buddy classes are another way to explore learning and engage students – we’ll never get every student interested every time but with a variety of activities across the school week we work very hard to engage as many as possible.
And of course Book Week is coming up next week – students are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character on Wednesday for the parade and there’s a bit of a competition happening with classroom doors. Parents and families are most welcome to come and watch the parade on Wednesday and then have a look around the school – be sure to drop in to the library – it’s starting to look pretty special in there!

Prep Jardine students have been busy exploring their sense of self through creative activities. This week, they crafted "I am", "I can" and “I can’t ….yet!” statements, where they confidently expressed who they are and what they can achieve. From "I am kind" to "I can swim," their words beautifully reflect their growing self-awareness. Positive self-talk builds children’s self-esteem and confidence and makes it easier for them to handle difficult situations. It
also helps with their problem-solving and decision-making skills. You are all amazing, Preps!
1/2A have hurtled through our Solar System and have learnt about the Sun, the Planets and the Moon and how they move around each other. Our busy scientists are practising their observation skills by looking at the moon this week. What patterns will they discover? We have learnt about the terms we use to discuss information texts such as heading, diagram, label and image. The students have read information texts as a class or independently and shown their knowledge through art and diagrams.
Book Week – Sunday 17 August – Friday 23 August
2024 Theme – ‘Reading is Magic’
We are very excited to be celebrating Book Week again this year and have planned a range of activities for students and families to enjoy.
Doorway to a Book – every day of Book Week.
Doors around the school will be decorated in a book theme for others to admire. Teachers will take their classes on a tour of these during the week during lessons. Any family members wanting a tour can join our ushers in the foyer from 8.50am each morning (please sign in and out).
*Dress Up Parade – Wednesday August 21st
Commences 9.10 – 10.00am in the Gym.
Students are asked to have a book representing their character with them as part of their costume.
Families are welcome to attend the parade and dress up as well!
(In line with DECYP Policy, please ensure any photographs you take are only of your children.)
Book Voting
Students and staff will be invited to vote on their favourite Book Week book. Who might have the same skills as the Book Week judges in deciding the winners?
Library Activities
Various activities in the library will be hosted by different staff at lunchtime from Monday through to Friday.
We are looking forward to celebrating the week with everyone.
