School Association – how we’ll bring it all together!
I encourage all parents, families and community members, including those who have already expressed an interest, to come along and help form our new School Association. Anyone with a connection to the school has the right to be on the School Association, people interested in taking a specific role will form the School Association Committee.
In two weeks’, time – Thursday August 21, we’ll have our first School Association Meeting in the Move Well, Eat Well room, childcare provided.
We’ll look at who we have interested in committee positions (for example we need a Chairperson, a Secretary and a Treasurer) and ensure we have good representation across the school and community. We must have three parent reps and no more than three community reps. We should have at least one staff rep but no more than three. It would be great to have a community rep. If there are enough people interested in committee positions, we may have to hold an election.
Then we’ll open the meeting up to hear what you would like the School Association to do and discuss how this could happen! There are guidelines we have which guide us in what we can do and how to do it and as well as support for those members who take on committee positions.
In the second half of this meeting, it would be great to put a calendar together of actions that we’d like to achieve – let’s not take on too much to start with – to truly build an active School Association that are a valued part of our school.
Please note, we’re about to make another car space available for disability parking; we’ve already had an open afternoon for families, and we have a plan to offer special canteen style services soon.
On Thursday Sept 4th, we’ll meet again and hopefully confirm our committee! If we do, then we’ll meet formally (record keeping) and have a full report from the Principal about what’s happening around the school – this will start to include plans for the following year.
On Thursday, September 18th we’ll meet again. By then we should be able to see if we are able to sustain numbers to support the Association in an ongoing manner. If we do, we’ll establish a calendar for the next 12 months with two meetings a term, usually one at the beginning and one towards the end. Once it becomes routine, we’ll really be able to get things going!
I love being Principal of Springfield Gardens. I believe having an active School Association where parents feel involved and represented will only make our school a better place.
Please consider coming along.

Prep Jardine
Prep Jardine, along with Kinder and the Grade 1/2 classes, enjoyed a visit from the Young Tassie Scientists (UTAS) on Tuesday August 12. Sam, Emily and Cassidy came and shared their knowledge about Space, Crystals and Brains (astrophysics, chemistry and neuroscience).
The students shared what new piece of information they found the most interesting, things like the colours of crystals and how they are made, how neural pathways are formed so we remember things, and that black holes are made from exploding stars!

1/2 Nicole
1/2P have started this term discussing what it’s like to try new things. We discussed going to new places, trying a new food and learning a new skill. We reflected on what trying a new thing feels like for us.
Trinity: When I try to use my sister’s skateboard, it was a little bit scary.
Aaliyan: When I have learnt how to do something new, I feel good.
Oakleigh: Trying something new made me feel uncomfortable.
Elijah: New things make me feel nervous.
Joban: Doing something new makes me feel scared.
Johaan: When I did something, it was scary, but then it wasn’t.
Prishu: When I rode a scooter down a hill, it was fast scary. When I held the handle tight, I was scared.
Cairene: When I was six, I learnt how to draw a bird. I felt proud.
Ivey: When I talk in front of others, I feel nervous, scared and uncomfortable. After I feel comfortable and very, very proud of myself.
Matilda: Trying something new makes me feel happy and scared.
Parisa: Learning to ride a big bike makes me feel nervous and excited. I keep practising.
Ronin: Happy a lot
Brodyn: Trying new things makes me feel happy.
Jesse: Jumping on the trampoline makes me feel happy.
Nakia: When I try something new, I feel excited. My new x-box game is fun.
We’ve also started learning about natural, managed and constructed places in geography. We walked around our school identifying the different types of places and in pairs took photos with the iPads.

We also welcome our lovely student teacher, Ms Aleysha and hope she enjoys her time with us.
3/4 Pears
This term in HASS, 3/4P have been diving into the fascinating history of Australia, focusing on early explorers. We’ve been learning about famous explorers such as Abel Tasman and James Cook and discussing what it might have been like to set sail into the unknown hundreds of years ago.
To bring our learning to life, 3/4P stepped into the shoes of 17th-century explorers themselves! Using our imaginations and what we’ve learned in class, we created detailed maps of "newly discovered" lands. We designed creative and thoughtful maps that reflected both historical techniques and a touch of adventure.
It’s been an engaging way to combine history and creativity

Farewell & Welcome
On Friday we said our goodbyes to Mrs O’Neill, who has taken twelve month’s maternity leave ahead of the birth of her first child, who is due in early September. We wish her and James well, and look forward to meeting her baby girl soon.
This week we welcomed Miss Emily Chick as the new Kindergarten teacher, replacing Mrs O’Neill during her maternity leave. She has been working in a relief teacher capacity at Springfield over the last two terms, so many of the school community are familiar with her friendly face.
Mrs Ellen Green is also a familiar face, returning to Springfield this term to take over the Launch in Learning (LiL) and Pre-Kinder sessions on Fridays.
