From the Principal

As I made my way around the school today it was so nice to see so many positive, learning based behaviours and relationships in all classrooms.

As the Principal of the school, one of my ongoing responsibilities is to build, maintain and lead an environment that supports teachers to teach and students to learn. Consistency amongst teachers is developed through professional learning and strong collegial discussions. We then teach students what is expected of them. We also ensure that when a problem arises, it is dealt with and unpacked so that children are aware of what they should be doing and not just punished with consequences.

Our Values of Learning, Respect and Community are a firm foundation to our ways of working. It was a real pleasure to see so many children awarded Values Certificates today because of a great start to the school year. Congratulations to those students and well done to all students on their efforts so far this year – let’s continue to do this well throughout the year and make the most of every possible learning opportunity

Kindergarten

What a wonderful start we have had to our Kinder year! We have spent lots of time getting to know each other and learning new routines within our classroom. We have been to the library and participated in Art class as well as Music and P.E. We have had a great time playing in our classroom and learning to take turns and sharing our toys with others. Sharing can be tricky. We have started talking about what we like about ourselves and who we are. There are lots of things that are special about everyone in Kinder Green. We have also started talking about what can make us safe and happy at school: Using our safe hands and our kind words. We are doing lots of work with our hands to strengthen the muscles in them ready for writing. We have enjoyed lots of outside play on the bikes and climbing and running.

Things you can do at home:

  1. Using chalk or pencils, practice making some straight soldier lines and rainbows. As children’s muscles develop, so do their hand control, wrist rotation, fine-motor skills and pencil grip
  2. Remind your child about using their “safe hands” and keep their hands to themselves to keep others safe and happy!

1/2 Absolom

1/2 have had a great start to the year. We have been so excited to get to know our classmates and we have been learning that we can be a class family. We are working on treating each other with kindness and respect. We read the book 'a class is a family' and we decided that we wanted our classroom to feel like family too. To make sure we act like a family and be the best we can be we brainstormed what we wanted our classroom to be and feel like and came up with a class promise.

We have been learning about classroom routines, having a growth mindset and setting high expectations for ourselves. In our third Read to Self for the year we were so excited to realise we managed to read (showing correct reading behaviours) for 20 minutes!!!! In English we are learning about recount writing and 5 finger retell. In Maths we are beginning the year with a focus on Number (sequencing, number identification, subitising and place value).

My favourite thing about the start of the year was:

"Learning about ICT and playing with bee-bots" – Seb
"Making new friends in the classroom" -
Piper
"Learning and doing the SWST test" -
Faith
"Enjoy learning all the different things Miss A teaches us" -
Mason

We can't wait to see what the year brings and how we can extend our learning to be the best that we can be.

3/4 Mahy

In 3/4 Mahy we have had a fabulous start filled with laughs and learning.

We have been investigating Miss Mahy’s favourite word ‘yet’. When we use a Growth Mindset, we shift our thinking by adding the word ‘yet’. We have agreed to always give challenges a go and never give up!

“I can’t do it…yet.”
“I don’t know the answer…yet.”

Here are some of the things in 3/4 Mahy that we can’t do…YET

6 Perry

It has been an exciting and fun-filled couple of weeks in Grade 6. We received our red hats on the first day of term, marking the start of our journey as the leaders of Springfield Gardens. This week Mrs Kearney talked to us about our roles and responsibilities as Daily P.E. leaders and taught us a few important tips and tricks when talking to, helping, and organising groups of students. We practiced a few ball skills, played a few games, and now feel ready and excited to run Daily P.E. activities with the younger classes.

In the classroom, 6 Perry created wonderful seascapes using chalk pastels, which are now displayed proudly outside our classroom.

As the term progresses, we look forward to sharing our learning and inquiry with you and as always, please feel free to get in contact if you have any questions or just want a chat!

Kitchen Garden Program

‘The Case of the Missing Plants’

In our school garden our students are working hard to develop their knowledge about vegetables. The students put a lot of hard work into planting and raising seedlings, and eventually harvest these vegetables. Once harvested the students look forward with anticipation to learn new skills in the kitchen and deepen their knowledge how to prepare the vegetables and explore new ways to cook with the produce they grow.

In the garden this week some students have put on their ‘Super Sleuth Hats’ to find out why some of the vegetables have been mysteriously disappearing. Upon further investigation they found human footprints in the garden beds where the plants went missing. Unfortunately, someone has removed 2 rows of carrots and pulled up some of the potatoes in the school garden. These vegetables are a valuable learning experience for our students, and we endeavour to provide our students with a ‘paddock to plate’ experience, without them learning is interrupted.

If you happen to see anyone removing produce from the garden, would you help support our students, by giving a gentle reminder the garden is for student learning, or contact the office with a description of the person for follow up.

How to Protect yourself from unwanted contact

Make your accounts private

By adjusting your privacy settings, you can stay in control of who sees what you post online and who can contact you directly.

For example, you can update your settings to only accept messages from people on your ‘friends’ list.

It’s also a good idea to check your location sharing options to make sure your location is only available to you or to specific friends.

If you want to know how to check what is public, see our advice on managing your digital reputation.

You could even sit down for 30 minutes and check all the privacy settings in your social media apps – it will be time well spent!

For more info on privacy settings see the eSafety Guide.

Delete contacts you don’t talk to

Go through all the people who are your online friends or who follow you on social media and check that you actually know them. If you don’t, it’s probably a good idea to delete them.

Bonus tip — when you get a notification that it’s someone’s birthday and you don’t know them well enough to say HBD on their profile, think about deleting them from your account.

Delete requests from strangers

When you get a friend or follow request from someone you don’t know, check if you have mutual friends. Remember, it’s easy for a person online to pretend to be someone they are not. If you’re unsure, delete the request.
