Move Well Eat Well
Move Well Eat Well offers endless possibilities to reinforce literacy, numeracy, science, cultural studies and all aspects of environmental sustainability. It is about pleasurable food education with the aim to form positive food habits for life. If a child is regularly engaged in activities in the kitchen and is invited to the table and encouraged to taste and learn about nutritious, delicious food that child will grow to embrace fresh, seasonal flavours and will develop a deep understanding about the natural world and how to relate to others. Move well eat well classes provide the space, structure, experiences and positive role modelling that encourage children to learn about the food production process form the ground up, engage in hands-on activities and celebrate a seasonal harvest and the joy that comes with sharing a delicious array of dishes with their peers. Studies have found that children are more likely to try new foods if they have grown or cooked them themselves.
Our program runs with a health and physical education focus with many opportunities for students to engage in other curriculum areas as they read recipes, measure ingredients, review nutritional elements of recipes and write reports about healthy food choices, investigate extending the life of food products through different storage methods (preserving, freezing, different food containers and learning the names of ingredients and dishes in several languages and the origins of these. They learn new language to describe flavours, foods, plants and processes which increases their vocabulary. They develop their math skills as they calculate, measure and weigh ingredients. They learn to work as part of a team, develop their awareness of and respect for cultural differences and grown in confidence as they achieve new skills and knowledge.
